Conservation & Social Responsibility
Responsible Tourism
- Founded in 1995, the 62,000 acres world renowned Lewa Wildlife Conservancy has served as a catalyst for conservation across Kenya.
- Lewa Safari Camp is the only tourism property that is actually owned by the Conservancy itself. All profits generated from conservancy fees and the Camp are reinvested by Lewa Wildlife Conservancy into its conservation and community initiatives. As a result of visiting Lewa Safari Camp, you directly help improve the lives of thousands of people in the local communities whilst also contributing to the protection of Kenya's wildlife and habitat.
- Through its efforts in protecting endangered species, facilitating conservation and community development and providng wildlife education for numerous schools in the surrounding areas, Lewa Wildlife Conservancy has become Africa's leading conservation and responsible tourism model.
- The Lewa Wildlife Conservancy Development Programmes are designed to provide social and economic benefits to the surrounding communities. An aspiration of these programmes is to reduce incidents of human-wildlife conflict and increase community benefits through wildlife and tourism. Lewa provides these communities with health-care and education support, agricultural and water projects and a micro-credit programme that serves over 800 women.
- We dispose of waste responsibly at Lewa Safari Camp, recycling rubbish wherever possible. Once transported to Nairobi, we sell all separated glassto the 'Central Glass' recycling plant. All the funds generated are given directly to a family planning program run by the North Lake Branch of the East African Women's League.
- Ecotourism Kenya has awarded Lewa Safari Camp "Bronze Level" Eco Rating, recognizing the initial stages of our efforts to upgrade the camp's back of house so that all systems are as environmentally friendly as possible.
The Lewa Education Programme

In addition to the funds Lewa Safari Camp generates for the Conservancy's community and conservation programmes, we would like to specifically encourage you to support the Lewa Education Programme. The Conservancy provides consistent support for 12 schools in the surrounding area, including construction of classrooms, teachers’ housing and kitchens, a feeding programme catering for 4,000 students, bursaries for more than 500 children, support for over 60 orphans, adult literacy serving at least 300 and tri-weekly conservation education available to schools country wide.
If you are interested in including a visit to one of the schools in your itinerary, we invite you to make a $50 per person minimum donation to the Lewa Education Programme. Kindly be aware that the Lewa Education Programme cannot allocate specific donations to particular schools or students, but distributes donations according to priorities as outlined by them. Please feel free to Contact Us if you would llike more information.
Lewa Safaricom Marathon

“The Safaricom Marathon is regarded as one of the toughest marathons in the world…”
In June 2011, Lewa Safari Camp entered a team of 10 enthusiastic staff to take part in this annual fundraising event held on Lewa Wildlife Conservancy itself, with over 1,000 other runners from 20 different countries.
Since its inception in 2000, the event has raised KES150,000,000 for a range of education, community development, health and wildlife conservation projects across Kenya.
Teams have to raise a minimum of KES 100,000 to enter the Half Marathon event. In 2011, Lewa Safari Camp’s team raised an amazing KES 173,819 for the continuing great work of the conservancy.
Running - again!
Lewa Safari Camp is hoping to raise enough funds to run again in June 2012. Will you sponsor the team and help us try to beat last year’s fundraising efforts?
